Matthew Abernathy

Chorusmaster

A Doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota, Matthew Abernathy is studying with the region’s premier mentors of choral conductors: Kathy Romey and Matthew Mehaffey. Matt is among this generation’s new legion of young and innovative contemporary musicians. Well known for his work in both opera and symphonic chorus, Abernathy is the Assistant Conductor/Chorus Master at the Lakes Area Music Festival in Brainerd, MN and has collaborated with conductors including Michael Christie, Leonard Slatkin, Andrew Altenbach, Jonathan Brandani, Nicholas Kraemer, Kenneth Kiesler, Larry Rachleff, and Christof Perick.

Matthew spent three seasons on staff at the Minnesota Opera as Music Director of Project Opera, the company’s nationally recognized youth opera program, Chorus Master for the Minnesota Opera Children’s Chorus, and Conductor for Voices of Opera, the Opera’s adult community chorus. He has prepared the Minnesota Opera’s professional chorus for productions of Don Pasquale, and prepared the children’s chorus for La Bohème and Dead Man Walking.
