Orchestra Festival and Young Artist Competition Winner(s) 

With the Dakota Valley Symphony and Health Sciences Orchestra

Selections will include:

Rimsky-Korsakov: Procession of the Nobles from Mlada
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto, First Movement, featuring Julian Maddox
Handel: "V'adoro, pupille" from Giulio Cesare, featuring Kathyrn Rupp

This concert will feature the winners of our Seventh Annual Young Artists competition in our final concert of our 28th season.  We are also pleased to welcome back the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Orchestra to join together with the Dakota Valley Symphony in a performance of Tchaikovsky's powerful Symphony No. 4.

Dakota Valley Symphony Announces Winners of 2014 Young Artists Competition

The Dakota Valley Symphony is pleased to announce that there are two winners of our 2014 Young Artist Competition.  We would like to congratulate vocalist Kathryn Rupp and violinist Julian Maddox. Kathryn and Julian will perform with the symphony on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.

Kathryn Rupp is a senior at Prior Lake Senior High School where for the past four years she has developed a passion for singing classical music. During this time she has been a student of Dr. Melissa Culloton and with her teacher, has received many vocal awards some of which include; Thursday Musical Scholarship recipient, MMTA Young Artist State Winner and NATs Finalist. Her musical training has also included a six-week study at Boston University Tangelwood Institute, and Minnesota’s Opera’s Project Opera under the direction of Dale Kruse and many master classes and other contests.  Kathryn plans to continue her musical education at Simpson College this coming fall where she will pursue a degree in vocal performance. Kathryn would like to thank Dakota Valley Symphony for this unforgettable opportunity as well as her many wonderful teachers and loving family.


Julian Maddox, 16-year-old violinist from Minneapolis, studies with Sally O'Reilly at the University of Minnesota School of Music in the PSEO program.  He is also a student at the Breck School, and has held a principal position in the U of M Symphony Orchestra.

In the past five years, Julian has been a prize winner in the Schubert Club and Thursday Musical Competitions, and has won first place in both Intermediate and Junior divisions of the MNSOTA Mary West Solo Competition. His string quartet won first place in the MNSOTA Chamber Music Competition in 2011.

Julian attends Bravo! Summer String and Keyboard Institute each year, where he hones his solo and chamber music skills.  Since the summer of 2011, he has performed and studied with Miss O’Reilly in Pienza, Italy, at the Italy Summer Music Festival. At ISM, he has had masterclasses with Eriko Tsuchihashi, Associate Concertmaster at La Scala,  Professor Yair Kless, and Patrick Strub. Julian plans to pursue a career as a violinist
